4b086e7f21 Generalize example target rule in common.mak so that it sets a -example$(EXESUF) 
suffix for all example files instead of doing this in individual Makefiles.

3344cf851c Use a wildcard match instead of a list to remove test programs. 
This is robust against renames and also removes test programs not
(yet) hooked up in the main Makefiles.

6510c453ab Add _XOPEN_SOURCE #define. This is necessary for (s)random(), which are XSI 
extensions of POSIX. Avoids implicit declaration warnings on some systems.
